A US congressman is currently campaigning to change the rules on digital licenses

With Sony moving away from physical media, new legislation is being proposed in the US. The legislation aims to ensure that if you buy a digital game, you fully own it.

Protests are still ongoing online about the removal of physical media in 2028. Many PlayStation owners feel they lose ownership without a disc.

A US congressman is currently campaigning to change the rules on digital media and digital licenses.

As reported by IGN, Ritchie Torres said: “Consumers must have the right to own, the right to play, and the right to transfer the games they buy.”

With digital media, you buy the item but cannot sell it because technically you don’t own it currently.

It’s been known that some game servers have been closed, rendering the games useless.

The power Sony has over its users is immense. This week it was announced that if you did not have the correct firmware on your PS, you would be disconnected from the PlayStation Network.

If the congressman’s ‘The Power To The Players Act’ gets passed, it will mean “consumers own what they buy and can keep playing long after a company moves on.”

The only physical thing you get with GTA6 is a box with a code in it.

But this is great news for gamers and the second-hand market. My gamers hope this will cause Sony to do a U-turn and produce physical media.

Fingers crossed for this bill, and we hope if it passes, other countries will follow suit. From a monetary standpoint, not everyone has the cash to keep buying AAA-rated games.

With physical media, you could always get a bargain on eBay and enjoy the game. Also, always remember that once you buy a game, you own it, and if it’s rubbish, you’re stuck with it.
